Nothing Personal

(Originally posted January 26, 2011) A while back, I wrote about the “God Hates Goths” website –  now well known among both Vampyres and goths – and which is rumored to be a parody, and which nevertheless still helps fuel hatred and misconceptions against goths and goth culture. Bearing this in mind, just this week I found some rather nasty articles on the parody website Encyclopedia Dramatica, which is something like Wikipedia, just not meant to be taken seriously.
Articles abound there on various topics, making fun of this and that, usually things normally taken very seriously on other sites. Unfortunately, it seems that some of the contributors have misinterpreted the idea of a parody site and tried to make it a site for personal attacks on members of the Vampyre Community, and on the Community as a whole. Personal information was posted in public, and some of the comments were made from actual personal hostility  by posting items which potentially endanger the livelihood and safety of some of these  members of our Community. The culprits carried this vendetta to the point where the whole thing seemed to me to be about as funny as a puppy in a microwave.
Here are the links I found listed below:

As you can see, the articles appear to be a veritable who’s who of the OVC, and if you have a closer look at some of them, you will see that some contributors have been taking mere parody way across the line into personal vendetta country.
I have a sense of humor, like everyone else, and yes – I can laugh at myself (and often do) – but even when there is something like a freedom of speech clause, there is still a boundary set by libel and slander, and I think some contributors to these articles have not only crossed that boundary, but broken, torn and shredded it – and burned the pieces.
Unlike Wikipedia, where articles and content are managed by committees of editors, information and contributions on ED are posted by individuals who can edit anything if they sign up as site members. Posts are accompanied by the warning: “Please note that all contributions to Encyclopedia Dramatica may be edited, altered, or removed by other contributors. If you don’t want your writing to be edited mercilessly, then don’t submit it here. You are also promising us that you wrote this yourself, or copied it from a public domain or similar free resource (see Encyclopedia Dramatica:Copyrights for details). DO NOT SUBMIT COPYRIGHTED WORK WITHOUT PERMISSION! Seeing the articles that annoyed and even shocked me, I realized that the simple answer would be to join the website and to make the necessary changes.

This done, I successfully made changes to one page  so far, and will continue to do the same to the others I found. Of course, nothing will prevent those individuals from changing it back again, or adding to it, but I feel I had to at least give it a try.

I realize that this article may add fuel to the fire by attracting more attention to these sites, but as it is, I found them in a basic Google search while looking for public information on the VC
In making this effort, I hope to return the pages to what I feel is more in line with an actual parody and not a severe personal attack which not only denigrates an individual, but also our entire Community, and which also leaves an online record of enduring contempt for Vampyres and the Vampire Community.
